One of the few silver linings of the current administration has been the rise of a new generation of energized first-time Democratic candidates. When I read Sarah Smith’s story today on Facebook, I knew it needed to be shared with the DKos community.

Hello everyone,
I am running for the House of Delegates in Henrico County, Virginia. This is a district currently held by a Republican; however, it's a district that Hillary won in November, and we are going to flip it blue. Let me tell you about myself and why I'm running. I live in Henrico with my husband and my two kids. I went to the University of Virginia for undergrad and the University of Richmond for law school. I am a hearing officer for Medicaid appeals, and I see people every day who need health insurance. Virginia has not expanded Medicaid and people are suffering because of it. Our current Representative opposes expanding Medicaid (he also came out in support of Trumpcare) even though he is a doctor, and has admitted he knows people need help.
I can't stand by anymore. I got off of the bench, and I am running for office. I have talked to many voters in the area and they feel silenced like me - they feel like their voices are not being heard on a number of important issues such as women's rights, fair redistricting, and education. I want to fight for these people, and make Virginia a firewall against the Trump administration. I am fed up with the way politics are going in our General Assembly, so I am going to fix it. I've got a massive grassroots network behind me, and we will out-organize and out-work John O'Bannon so that I win this election in November.
